Sakina's Restaurant breathes new life into an age old story: the emotive tale of an immigrant coming to New York in pursuit of the American dream. Actor, comedian, and writer Aasif Mandvi originally performed his Obie Award-winning solo show off-Broadway 20 years ago. This past October, the iconic play was reimagined and produced by Audible for a limited run at Minetta Lane Theatre in the West Village of Manhattan. Recorded for an Audible-exclusive audience, listeners can forgo the price of admission and embark on the cross-cultural journey with Mandvi.

Having done business in India and worked with Indian-Americans, I enjoyed the sounds and personalities in this book but gave it 3 stars because it was just so disjointed. I’m sure that was deliberate or there is a thread here that I was unable to detect. The reading was energetic and each segment caught me up. Just didn’t hang together.

I couldn’t put it down as it got near the end so I realize the action had caught me up but it was slow getting started. The writer’s style is especially detailed and the characters are really hard to believe. But, action it has and I found myself needing to know what was going to happen to everyone.

The story had real potential but it was written and read in a slow style that didn’t work for an action story. Too much explanation in the midst of exciting scenes and read so slowly and deliberately it was frustrating. Not a series I would listen to again though maybe it would be better read.

Clearly this writer is capable but she had such an axe to grind that you can't escape it. I listened all the way through trying to understand how this dystopian world happened but the details are really hard to come by. If you're convinced fundamentalist Christians are all evil hypocrites and all men are two dimensional sex fiends, you might find a voice in this book. Otherwise, don't bother. Questions for the author: how did the Gideons take over? What was the radiation that sterilized so many women? Why weren't the fertile women valued and cherished? Why were they only available to the elite for marginal repopulation ability? How did they have enough people to continue their war? Why did the disaster only happen to white people? How big an area was held by the Gideon's? And on and on...

As James Rollins books go, this wasn't one of his best. The story line was interesting and kept my attention and the narration was excellent! There were just a few clumsy descriptions that surprised me - dead mice frozen under the snow are not still decaying, for example, but overall a good book.
