Their Eyes Were Watching God, an American classic, is the luminous and haunting novel about Janie Crawford, a Southern Black woman in the 1930s, whose journey from a free-spirited girl to a woman of independence and substance has inspired writers and readers for close to 70 years.

I'm amazed at the depth and introspection of the main character in the story, and the narrator's gorgeous tones add incredible richness to the voices of the characters, and the poetry of the narration and descriptions - a perfect marriage of words and voice. To me, the story is about learning to love deeply not to possess a loving relationship, but to become more whole and alive in oneself. It's the kind of book that I will probably read several times - first for the story, and then for the symbolism.

I get what the author was going for - creating a world where relatable family dynamics are played out in noir private eye style with high energy characters and banter. But it fell short. Writing wise, I often thought that the author over explained her points, dissipating the mystique, and the same goes for the dialogue. Plot wise, it lost a lot of momentum by starting in an interrogation scene much later in the story, backing up and then taking way too long to rejoin the action. Wouldn't read the others in the series.

Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Jane Eyre is my longtime favorite book, and it's a classic which I'll come back to again and again. Newton was a great narrator for the most part, but her characterization of Mr Rochester wasn't particularly animated. I usually read Mr. Rochester as having a dark sense of humor, but her portrayal of him was a bit more monotonous it in this version. Nevertheless very good!

I didn't read the story, but I don't imagine it could be as engaging as this dramatization. The acting and theatricality were perfectly executed and the suspense was well developed. In terms of plot it's probably typical for the genre, but the distaff characters and the blurred lines between life and afterlife, between love and vampirism make this a great piece.

The story is not as complex and philosophical as the Dark Materials trilogy, but it unfolds with the same sense of drama and the same richness of characters. Seriously, the characters are some of my favorite of all time. Philip Pullman is just masterful in creating the world and the story. And Anton Lesser does a PHENOMENAL job with the delivery. Especially when he voices Mrs Holland the old villain - so much texture and personality in his voice! It gave a whole other dimension to the story.
