In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

I’ve listened to a lot of Jon Robson’s books and enjoyed all of them. I was excited to see he had a podcast and binged that. This book stands alone but it’s especially insightful after hearing the podcast. The thing I love about him most is his genuine sense of curiosity and respect for his story and the people involved. The care he takes in handling sensitive and controversial subjects never fails to make me think deeply long after I’ve listened. I can’t recommend him enough.

I find myself looking for humor fiction more and more lately and it can be hard to find great quality characters and story telling in this genre. This series fits the bill perfectly. I love the characters, the narration, the world and the story so much I’ve listened to both twice. I have over 500 books in my Audible library and this series is one I find myself recommending a lot. Download both and enjoy. Can’t wait for the third!!

With authoritative reporting honed through eight presidencies from Nixon to Obama, author Bob Woodward reveals in unprecedented detail the harrowing life inside President Donald Trump’s White House and precisely how he makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies. Woodward draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files, and documents. The focus is on the explosive debates and the decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One, and the White House residence.

We all know Trump is a terrible person by almost any measure. If you don’t you won’t care about this review anyway. But I am seriously disappointed in this book. Bob Woodward seems like he put the narrative his sources wanted on record and barely questioned it. If he did at all. The supposed thoughts of Trump’s inner circle when dealing with his stupidity and complete narcissism are so laughable I can’t believe it’s in writing. They love to be martyrs saving us from their boss.

This is a story of a bunch of very very wealthy men who know they’ve aligned themselves with what will certainly be one of the worst administrations in US history, prepping themselves to look better as it burns. Despite them profiting from the dumpster fire. And Woodward just hands his credibility over to this pile of snakes. It’s sad and disappointing. This book is probably worth reading and / or listening to but I’ve lost respect for Woodward. These people love their money and power and sell their souls for it. Woodward just seems to be the latest.

I usually buy serious sci-fi but like to discover fun, lighter books once in a while. This was a great pick. I really enjoy the characters and their interactions as they go on ridiculous (or deadly) adventures. I have since downloaded the rest of the series and am looking forward to many hours of entertainment while doing chores and errands. Definitely worth the credits.

I think I respected Comey more before I got this book. I wanted to actually read it instead of casting judgements based on sound bites and poorly edited interviews. I truly felt that he was in a difficult position during the election and still feel that much of the country seems hell bent on tribalism at any cost and it’s disturbing. Whether or not I agreed with his actions I did think he was doing his best to serve in his role with honesty. Now....I’m not so sure. After listening to his drawn out explanation it becomes clear he absolutely DID act outside of accepted procedures which essentially means he went against what he also claims to believe in. And it basically poured gasoline on the dumpster fire. The empty fire extinguisher you now wield is useless Mr. Comey. And it doesn’t give me any joy to say it.

The description of the book did not did not do it justice. It’s incredibly difficult to really summarize Gone World because the author does such a brilliant job of blending hard science fiction, crime suspense, and a bit of horror. I didn’t know much about the author or the book when I started and I’m glad I didn’t. It grabbed me from the first chapter and I listened to this though my commute, workday and somewhat unfortunately, through most of the night. The only thing I didn’t appreciate was the epilogue. But I’m ignoring it because it doesn’t really matter. The book is brilliant.
