This book and The Connected Child (Purvis) are my top 2 recommendations for foster and adoptive parents. (I'm a fost/adopt social worker.) We consistently get feedback about how helpful they are to the parents. Easy to read. Helpful to read over and over because you understand more/differently each time.

Despite my best intentions, I was beginning to understand how my dad saw the world. The shadows haunting every living thing. The secrets inside the lies wrapped in bullshit. Even Gracie’s box of pills was beginning to make sense. For the past five years, Hayley Kincain and her father, Andy, have been on the road, trying to outrun the memories that haunt them both. They moved back to Andy’s hometown to try a “normal” life, but the horrors he saw in the war threaten to destroy their lives.

What the woman from Quantico was doing in a dark alley after midnight is just one mystery. The other is more unsettling: Macy is Faith’s mirror image - the twin sister she never knew she had.

Ginger is a medium for the Spirit Corps, a special Spiritualist force. Each soldier heading for the front is conditioned to report to the mediums of the Spirit Corps when they die so the corps can pass instant information about troop movements to military intelligence. Ginger and her fellow mediums contribute a great deal to the war efforts, so long as they pass the information through appropriate channels.

Liked that the world building and zombie aspects don't totally weigh down the pace of the story.
Liked that MC is "poor white trash" but also very relate-able and sympathetic (i.e. we are not reading her story to laugh at / be amazed by her antics, all the while knowing we are totally superior to her),
