Five-year-old Sloane McBride couldn’t sleep that night. Her parents were arguing again, their harsh words heating the cool autumn air. Then there was that other sound - the ominous thump before all went quiet. In the morning, her mother was gone. The official story was that she left. Her loving, devoted mother! That hadn’t sat any better at the time than it did when Sloane moved out at 18, anxious to leave her Texas hometown in search of anywhere else. But not even a fresh start working as a model in New York could keep the nightmares at bay. Or her fears that her father is deadly.

This was a decent story but somewhat challenging for me because I would never let my kids act like this. A parent needs to act like a parent and not be scared of your child not liking you so that made it very frustrating for me.

It really is a great book, I had never read the story it is supposed to be based off of so I personally feel it has nothing to do with whether or not you would enjoy this book. loved it!

Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family. Then Simon says another woman’s name. She knows Laura has spent nearly her whole life in the small beach town of Belle Isle, Georgia; she knows Laura's never wanted anything more than to lead a quiet, normal life in this conventional community; she knows Laura's a kind and beloved speech pathologist who helps others; she knows Laura's never kept a secret in her life. Let me start by saying years ago I read my first Karin slaughter book, after that book I then read every book she had written, new and old. That is how much I love her books! I cant believe that she even wrote this book, the writing ,the story line, the characters, none of it seems like a slaughter book. I was okay in the beginning, was lost through most of the middle and it kinda got pulled together in the end. disappointed!!!!!!!
