Lords of the Sea audiobook cover art

Must have for fans of nautical history!

Amazing story that reveals both the strength of democracy - the wisdom of crowds and the voice of the majority; and democracy's ironic fault - ignoring that fact that crowds are often unenlightened and seek to preserve the status quo when reality demands otherwise. In the context of naval history, this book is fantastic at illustrating the power of the navy at controlling the flow of resources and there by controling empire. Great survey of ancient naval architecture, strategy and tactics. A great companion to the Hermans' "To Rule the Wave; How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World." The Athenian navy shaped the ancient world.

Nice companion with Wood's "The Story of India"

Well written, very reverent. Given that his disciples documented his life, Armstrong does a very good job of extracting the human from the religious texts. An excellent companion to Michael Wood's "The Story of India," adding depth and color to the history of the subcontinent. Siddartha is legend and monumental in the history of ideas. Facinating that 100s of millions follow a faith founded by a man who eschewed the supernatural. This book has a lot to teach the west about seeing the world as it is, without judgement and without fear.

The transcript of the interviews, published years ago, is inaccessable because of its form. This audio release is a much better venue for the material. Campbell is amazing, insightful and inspiring. No small feat without dogma or faith. Listen in the context of it's time, the 1970's, and don't get distracted by the Star Wars references. He show why the supernatural is unnecessary and the natural is super. Once you see the divinity of everything, you don't need the divine. Great read.

A compelling and entertaining compilation of history, geography, geology, genetics, anthropology, religion and linguists. Reaches back to the beginning of modern man and reaches forward to the end of the Raj. Depth and breadth, beauty and horror. A great survey of the sub-continent.
