The Bram Stoker award-winning author of A Head Full of Ghosts adds an inventive twist to the home invasion horror story in a heart-palpitating novel of psychological suspense that recalls Stephen King’s Misery, Ruth Ware’s In a Dark, Dark Wood, and Jack Ketchum’s cult hit The Girl Next Door. Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road.

This book was well-written with characters of depth, but the narrator’s voice made them all unlikeable.

Michael Sheen is one of the most gifted narrators I have ever listened to...if not the best. The story was superb, the characters had depth and I cannot wait to watch them grow.

After mystery author Diane Christie loses her husband to suicide, she and her son move to the small coastal town of Fog Harbor, Massachusetts. Her daughter is attending college nearby, and Diane hopes that her family can now begin to heal. But rebuilding their lives after the tragedy isn't so simple. Diane's depressed college-age daughter, Alexa, still avoids her, critical of everything Diane does, and even her generally amiable teenage son, Josh, has started acting out.

I typically enjoy this author and I was very pleased with part of this book. However the ending is just absurd. I didn't find the ending to be true to the nature of the characters throughout the rest of the story. A vague "fill in the ending for yourself" would have been less frustrating than this asinine ending.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

This story is a good story. It does keep you intrigued even though the characters are largely unlikeable. However, the author narrates this and it is hard to listen to. In a book with mostly male characters it was hard to listen to the author, who in my opinion, sounds like Nancy Grace read this story. If you don't car about the narrator you'll be fine.

Would you be willing to try another one of Donna Tartt’s performances?

NO!

Everyone who lives at 23 Beulah Grove has a secret. If they didn't, they wouldn't be renting rooms in a dodgy old building for cash - no credit check, no lease. It's the kind of place you end up when you you've run out of other options. The six residents mostly keep to themselves, but one unbearably hot summer night, a terrible accident pushes them into an uneasy alliance. What they don't know is that one of them is a killer. He's already chosen his next victim, and he'll do anything to protect his secret.

I really enjoyed the story tremendously. However I usually listen to these while cleaning, cooking and eating. This book doesn't mix well with the latter two. It's well worth it if you're not eating :-).
