Deputy Mattie Cobb is in a dark place and has withdrawn from Cole Walker and his family to work on issues from her past. When she and her K-9 partner, Robo, get called to track a missing junior high student, they find the girl dead on Smoker's Hill behind the high school, and Mattie must head to the Walker home to break the bad news. But that's only the start of trouble in Timber Creek because soon another girl goes missing - and this time it's one of Cole's daughters.

Entertaining and never any slow parts! Some of the repetitive descriptions get annoying; almost juvenile and makes you sigh. Love the dog and learned a lot about K-9 teams. The reason I can’t give the narrator 5 stars is she isn’t able to vary character voices enough and her voicing of most of the men, except Cole, are all the same with a southern draw. Why, when the book is set in Colorado?? She does an excellent job with Mrs. Gibbs, with her Irish accent.

The Wizard's Council of Tarador was supposed to tell young Koren Bladewell that he is a wizard. They were supposed to tell everyone that he is not a jinx, that all the bad things that happen around him are because he can't control the power inside him, power he doesn't know about. The people of his village, even his parents, are afraid of him, afraid he is cursed. That he is a dangerous, evil jinx.

If you have never listened to an audiobook narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds, you don’t know how enjoyable a book can and should be. He’s amazing! I’ve listened to narrators who have ruined a great story because every character sounded the same! A struggle to listen to with so many lines with he said she said etc Tim’s characters are distinct; never a doubt as to which one is speaking and this particular story has an abundance of characters with each voice unique, even the maids’ voices vary! Tim is a master! He can make an angry wizard roar two lines after a timid boy asks a question.
So, I like this series so far. No trash talk with only minor cursing. No nasty lusty love scenes or foul descriptions of women just full on adventure! Horses, soldiers, wizards, a princess, villains, kindness, bullies, heroes, ships, a castle, villages, and travel to new lands. Keeps moving, unpredictable, interesting enough to move on to the next book with enthusiasm!
