Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someoneto go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.

Though I love Correia's MHI books, which was a big surprise to me, I was a bit hesitant to start this new series.

In reading this book I realized two things. First, I really don't like alternate history. And second, Larry Correia is a good enough storyteller that I didn't care.

It was nothing particular, but somewhere around the quarter mark the story stopped being about the setting and started being about the characters and the magic, and it was fantastic.

I'll definitely be reading book 2.

Great Fantasy, but Too Obsessed with Sex

The actual plot itself is an amazing story, five stars, but every moment that is not about the plot is about this person or that person's obsession with sex. It's insane. It's all anyone in the world seems to care about, talk about, think about -- ten times worse than any teenage boy.

I'm not saying the story is rife with sexual content, it isn't. It's just all anyone ever talks about in the book, I mean, get a life, people. Maybe sex is supposed to be a theme in the book or something, but if so, it came across like an anvil dropped on the head. I hope the author manages to diversify the characters' interests and obsessions for book 2.

Its a shame that you can't go to the beginnings of chapters because the track markers seem to be at random places in the middle of sentences and in middle of chapters.

I loved this book from the beginning all the way until the Sex Faery. But I thought I could push on past the stupid SEX FAERY part, seriously a sex faery. Little did I know that was only the hors d'oeuvres of the crap feast. The culture of the mercenaries was so terrible it was laughable. I listened in complete shock as all the fine writing and beautiful storytelling of the last many hours went down the drain never to return. Rothfuss has lost all my trust.

I wish audible would refund my credit on this one, but for some reason they wouldn't. Boo.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

They go through all the material so fast I just wish they could have covered more of what is in the book. It would be nice to have more examples and clarification. Somehow I didn't realize the book was abridged until I finished it. I just wish there was an unabridged version available.
