Three little girls set off to school one sunny May morning. Within an hour, one of them is dead. Fifteen years later, Kitty lives in an institution. She can't speak and has no memory of the accident that put her there, or her life before it. Nearby, Alison, a local artisan, struggles to make ends meet and to forget her past. When a job opens up in a prison as an art teacher, she takes it. Soon, though, she starts to receive alarming notes - followed by a frightening prisoner-on-prisoner assault while her back is turned.

This book was not my choice but that of my book club. I really did not want to read it but surprisingly found it quite enjoyable. Even though part of the storyline was far fetched it was good and near the end I couldn’t stop listening.

I liked this book even better than I thought. Though I think the part of living apart is silly, I was engrossed in the story the whole time. Being married 23 years now it really makes me grateful that we have never given up!

At 17, Mei should be in high school, but skipping fourth grade was part of her parents' master plan. Now a freshman at MIT, she is on track to fulfill the rest of this predetermined future: become a doctor, marry a preapproved Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer, produce a litter of babies. With everything her parents have sacrificed to make her cushy life a reality, Mei can't bring herself to tell them the truth - that she (one) hates germs, (two) falls asleep in biology lectures, and (three) has a crush on her classmate Darren Takahashi, who is decidedly not Taiwanese.

In the summer of 1928, sixteen-year-old Minka was looking forward to a sewing class picnic. This would be a rare chance to put aside farm chores, don a pretty dress, and enjoy an outing with other girls. It would be a day to remember. And it was - but not in the way Minka had dreamed. Cornered by a stranger in the woods, the young girl was assaulted. Minka still believed that the stork brought babies; she would not discover for months that she was pregnant.
