Twelve-year-old Zero is traveling with 20,000 people for 105 years to colonize a new planet. Everyone is in stasis, so they'll be safe during the trip, but when Zero's pod malfunctions it wakes him early, like 105 years early. At first he's excited to be the only one awake - he has the entire ship to himself, so he can go anywhere and see and do and eat anything he wants - but when a family of space pirates show up, trying to hijack the ship and kidnap the colonizers, Zero has to think fast and find a way to stop them all on his own.

In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

I love all Sanderson books and this one is no different. However, it's clearly the introduction to the series and there's a lot of character development but not a lot of what I would call Sanderson uniqueness. The narrator does a superb job. Very fun to listen to this book.

I agree with other reviewers. The book is a great look at impressive things extreme sports players have done to trigger "flow" and extra perceptory experiences, but aside from the brief statements at the end about educational institutions and how Montessori schools are more likely to trigger flow because they allow for students to get deeper into things that interest them without interruption, there wasn't a lot of practical use for me. My main take-away was try to get more focused time and to do things I love that will trigger my creativity. The narrator did a fantastic job.

I loved this brief look into the Acton academy. if only educators would realize that children are adults and need to be treated with the freedom that adults enjoy otherwise they will grow up feeling that it's okay to compel others to do the things they think are best for them. This is a critical public problem as well because anyone who grows up in the public education system has the mindset that that's how everyone should be educated. It's a hurdle that needs to be overcome mentally for adults to see their children is capable of doing something greater with their freedom given to them.
