Between 1937 and 1945, approximately 55 million people perished in the series of interrelated conflicts known as the Second World War. No continent was left untouched, no ocean unaffected. The war led to the eclipse of Europe and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as global superpowers; ushered in the atomic age; produced, in the Holocaust, the most horrific crime ever committed in the history of Western civilization, and led to the end of Europe's colonial empires around the world.

I listed to this right after the WWI set of lectures. After listening to many Great Courses lectures I worried about the endless recitation of death tolls especially after 55 million died in this war. It was respectfully presented (numbers given for magnitude of the battles) and given the weight of what was fought for and won. I was presently surprised by the Battle of Britain being broken into 2 lectures. The impending invasion of Britain and the fact it didn't happen and why was gripping. I also came away with a greater appreciation of the Pacific War which showed the endless combat for such small but vital pieces of land. The conclusion is something that everyone who had someone fighting in the war can attest to in the end. The sacrifice and valor of all involved cannot be underestimated.

Touched off by a terrorist act in Bosnia and spreading all too quickly beyond the expectations of those who were involved, World War I was an unprecedented catastrophe with a ghastly cost. After this first "total war"-the first conflict involving entire societies mobilized to wage unrestrained war, devoting all their wealth, industries, institutions, and the lives of their citizens to win victory at any price - the world itself would never be the same.

The performance covers the key battles as well as the mix of alliances that shaped each side. This is not an easy war with a recitation of battles, movements and how they were fought. This covers the horror of trench warfare, chemical warfare and why it made perfect sense at the time. It is very well presented and looks at the forces (capitalist, nationalist and socialist) that shaped those events. Even with consequences today.

Where does The Universe Has Your Back rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very well put together material. It drives towards being love as our inner core, not fear driven belief.

Have you listened to any of Gabrielle Bernstein’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

My first one.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

More so made you think. What is your intention in the world and how you perceive it. If found myself seeing where I'm doing fine in some paths of my life. But not so in others. The book helps guide you back to a place where you can clearly see your life that fear had colored in other ways.

Any additional comments?

Good for new seekers and a nice perspective for those further down the path.

Twenty-five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other televangelists first spoke of the United States being a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedoms and our way of life.

Where does American Fascists rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Chris Hedges book paints a disturbing picture of the American Evangelical movement. It provides a good look at the tactics that are employed. Hard to imagine people are getting away with some of this stuff even after the books publishing 10+ years later.

What does Chris Hedges and Eunice Wong bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Eunice Wong reads most of the book with Chris Hedges doing the beginning and end. Chris is a very clear speaker. There is no misunderstanding what he says and how he says it. It is a serious tone with giving straight forward analysis. Eunice does a great job emoting the stories such as Dr. D. James Kennedy's evangelism school (chilling). They have a great mixture of reciting the book.

If you could give American Fascists a new subtitle, what would it be?

How crazies have hijacked religion and made tons of money at it. And they are looking for you next.

Which character – as performed by Christopher Hurt – was your favorite?

Christopher Hurt did such a wonderful job with each character. His voice as Schad LaDue is probably the best. But his telling of the story in the dry humor of the book was best.
