After a failed apprenticeship, working her way up to head housekeeper of a posh London hotel is more than Sara Smythe ever thought she'd make of herself. But when a chance encounter with Theodore Camden, one of the architects of the grand New York apartment house The Dakota, leads to a job offer, her world is suddenly awash in possibility - no mean feat for a servant in 1884. The opportunity to move to America, where a person can rise above one's station.

It's 1945: When the critically wounded Captain Cooper Ravenal is brought to a private hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side, young Dr. Kate Schuyler is drawn into a complex mystery that connects three generations of women in her family to a single extraordinary room in a Gilded Age mansion. Who is the woman in Captain Ravenel's portrait miniature who looks so much like Kate? And why is she wearing the ruby pendant handed down to Kate by her mother?

In all honesty I nearly returned this right away. The narration bored me and seemed odd at first, but I decided to give it more time. I'm very glad I did! The plot drew me in, and the narration grew on me. Highly, highly recommend! I loved the story so much I need to hang on to it a bit mentally before moving to my next audiobook! Definitely one of my favorites 💜

I loved this story! Hooked me in from the beginning and made me want to stay in my car just to continue listening. Glad to see there are 2 more books that go with this one and have definitely snagged them up. Only downfall...it ended leaving me with questions and wanting more! Highly recommended 🙂
