This book takes a sharp turn in the middle of the first section. At the beginning it is actually talking about Mayan society, but very quickly turns to the topic of the biblical flood narrative and the author’s particular views on the book of Genesis. Rather than actually expand upon what we know of the Mayan people and their culture, the author instead decides to spend time discussing how angels and giants lived inland and thus weren’t destroyed by the great flood that erased all the great human cultures of the time.
Beyond this problem of pushing pseudo-biblical historical revisionism, I think that this book may contain work not written by the author. Google searching some of the passages of this book shows that the author may have directly copied sections from Wikipedia or excerpts of other books.
The narration isn’t even all that good either. The narrator is boring and frequently mispronounces words. He has a good voice and would be better if he actually put time and effort into public speaking. As it stands though, I cannot give him a good rating.
Overall, I give this book 1/5 stars on everything. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an actual scholarly look at these cultures. Spend your credit on a Great Courses class instead. At least they tell you what to expect and don’t copy other people’s work.
