It began on New Year's Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world's population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max.

I almost didn't buy this after reading a few of the less flattering reviews. I am so glad I did anyway! I haven't read anything by Nora Roberts for a couple decades (at least). My tastes run more towards Kim Harrison, Shannon Mayer, Patricia Briggs, Anne McCaffrey, Faith Hunter, Ilona Andrews, Marc Secchia, and others along those lines.
This book blew. My. Mind. The narrator was amazing, the character development and world building . . . well, just read or listen to the book. You will NOT be disappointed. It is not your average dystopian novel. I am just sorry I read the book this early before the release of book two. I love to binge read (ahem, listen to) series since I discovered the wonderful world of audio books.

To stand at the side of an elemental as their familiar is a gift given to few familiars. Yet here I stand with my thirteenth - Larkspur, child of the earth. I do not want this charge, for all my previous have ended in deaths I could not prevent. I am not sure my heart can take another loss of one bonded with me. Larkspur’s strength and heart call to me as only one other elemental's had, and I cannot deny the need to protect her and to shield her from all pain.

Dina DeMille may run the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, but she caters to a very particular kind of guest...the kind that no one on Earth is supposed to know about. Guests like a former intergalactic tyrant with an impressive bounty on her head, the Lord Marshal of a powerful vampire clan, and a displaced-and-superhot werewolf; so don't stand too close, or you may be collateral damage.

I started this series with no big expectations. I had read the reviews - many seemed to consider the storyline mediocre at best. I was pleasantly surprised, I must say. I thought it was fun, unique, and very engaging. The next two didn't fail to deliver more of the same. Ilona Andrews is a great team of authors, Renee Raudman puts her soul into the performance, and together that makes this series a winner for me.

Dina DeMille isn't your typical bed and breakfast owner. Her inn defies laws of physics, her dog is secretly a monster, and the only permanent guest of the inn is a former galactic tyrant with a price on her head. The inn needs guests to thrive and guests have been scarce, so when an arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.

I didn't read the description of this book when I bought it - I enjoyed the first book so thought I would continue along so just clicked Purchase for books 2 and 3. I was pleasantly surprised that it combines crossover characters from The Edge books (which you MUST read if you haven't already).
I won't give away any spoilers. It's a fun, engaging read. The narrator brings the book to life. Ilona Andrews is a team that excels at world and character building.

On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast.

The Edge lies between worlds, on the border between the Broken, where people shop at Wal-Mart and magic is a fairy tale—and the Weird, where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny…Charlotte de Ney is as noble as they come, a blueblood straight out of the Weird. But even though she possesses rare magical healing abilities, her life has brought her nothing but pain.

This world has so much appeal - it's very different from the Ilona Andrews dream team's other writings. As much as I love the Kate Daniels series, I like The Edge series just as much. They are fun, quirky, and they keep you on the edge of your seat. Renee Raudman is a very talented narrator and definitely adds a flair all her own to the story. I can't wait to read/listen to the next one.

My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental. My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed bastard child, that isn't going to happen. Taken away by the last Spirit Walker, I am meant to train with him so that I can finally stop the false mother goddess and her plans to rule both humans and elementals. I am meant to train so that I can meet her on even ground, but training takes time.

I don't know why I waited so long to read the Elemental books after I finished the Riley Adamson books . . . I guess I thought the Rileyverse would be too hard to live up to, but Lark's story is so closely entwined with Riley's yet still different enough to stand on it's own. I really enjoyed all of the books in this series. I hate seeing them end. Shannon Mayer's world and character building was phenomenal. And there are just enough for a good binge, lol. If you are even a little on the fence about reading these, just jump in and start. You won't regret it.
