The Baine Chronicles Series, Books 1-3 audiobook cover art

The story is fine, a little harlequin romance perhaps but engaging. Despite the main charactwr being a strong female the story is full of sexism, from the denigration of the feminine lesbian under cover persona to the female characters using their 'wiles' in very stereotypical ways. The male characters seem to have better personal character than all the female ones. is this author actually a woman or a guy with a female pen name?

Perhaps it is because I am listening rather than reading, but something about the story or way it is read makes it hard to understand what they are on about at times. I still have no idea what some of the plot twists meant.

I really like this character and the overall storyline is fine. the characters are interesting. one thing I find challenging in the audio book is I'm having difficulty concentrating and following what is going on when the narrator falls into a hypnotic sing-song cadence. I have to concentrate harder than I'd like to follow what is going on at those times. if she could focus on getting the meaning across in the long narrative passages it might really help.

I don't know if it was the monotone narration or something to do with the writing, but I couldn't get into the story and stay there. I listened to the while book and don't remember what happened. Derek and Julie looking for a rock, some fighting, not sure how it ended. Did they win? What was the point?

This book is one I return to, again and again. It fills me up. This is the most spiritual and sophisticated of Bujold's work. The narration is excellent as well.

What did you like best about The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts? What did you like least?

I like the actual content of this book and found it useful, but as a non-Christian and a devout member of another religion, would definitely have wanted to be warned that it assumes a Christian audience, quotes the bible, and gives advice from a Christian perspective.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have had a secular version in addition to a Christian version, or at least labelled this as a Christian book. The book could have stood on it's own without all the Christian talk. When I started hearing all the Christian stuff, I went back to look at whether that had been noted in the description or subtitle. I do not like being preached to without my consent. I would have given the book a 5 without this content, or if even if I had been warned and could consent to wading through the theological information to get to the useful bits.

Any additional comments?

Please take care to label religious books correctly in future. We are not all Christians.

What disappointed you about Damsel Under Stress?

Which adults who aren't religious nuts date for weeks without having sex? What kind of woman in her right mind (spoiler alert) leaves her 'true love' because she thinks she might be getting in the way of his job? I was patient through the first two books, but seriously, no sex? Not at all believable.

Which character – as performed by Eva Wilhelm – was your favorite?

The boyfriend, Palmer. His voice conveys the various sides of his character.

What character would you cut from Damsel Under Stress?

The protagonist. What an idiot.

Green Rubin did her own narration for the first book, and I found it much more engaging. I find myself dozing off with this narrator, and not following what she's saying.

Blood Drive audiobook cover art

narrator is awful

4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 06-07-12

Would you listen to Blood Drive again? Why?

Maybe, once I forget the plot line. The narration was so awful, it's distracting from the story. She doesn't sound like the character speaking, just someone reading the story, and not well at that.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator could have actually embodied and enlivened the less character.

Any additional comments?

The author makes the characters quite introspective, and explains too much using self talk of Anna's character rather than showing with her actions and dialogue. Please, please, replace the narrator so the remaining books aren't ruined for me.
