super easy read. the main plot was pretty decent until the dues ex machina steps in at the last few chapters.

That sums up the good. this feels formulaic. it's almost as if someone wrote down the tropes from the in death novels and rewrote the characters.

what's left is an ok but sloppy police procedural with 2 dimensional characters, stilted dialogue and a love story that lacks any realism. in the sex scenes, all I could picture were two mannequins doing it. painful.

take my advice, just go read or reread the in death books. save you time and frustration

Great mystery and suspense writers have created some of the most unforgettable stories in all of literature. Even those who don't consider themselves fans of this intriguing genre are familiar with names such as Hercule Poirot, Sam Spade, Hannibal Lecter, and Robert Langdon, and understand the deep and lasting impact this writing has had on literature as a whole.

When horror author Thad McAlister began his latest novel, a tale rooted in the witch trials of centuries past, the words flowed effortlessly. The story poured forth, filling page after page with the most frightening character ever to crawl from his imagination. It was his greatest work, one that would guarantee him a position among the legends of the craft.

I suspended my disbelief and Blackmore just kept knocking it down off the pedestal.

I was good with everything up to the actual physical injuries. it's not that they were gruesome. it's just the human body doesn't work like that and then recover that quickly.

if you're going to go into that much detail about what physically happens to the character, be ready with results.

the Russian accent of nickoli reminds me of Borat. Honestly it felt like the author was trying to cross over from romance to something else. the editing was terrible as well. for some reason they could only settle on like six descriptive words or phrases to describe the human anatomy. the sex scenes felt clinical. suddenly this innocent virgin went from knowing nothing to being very knowledgeable about sex in like a week with zero exposure or instruction. it was magic.

I read this book for my book club. reading the description it had a lot of promise. there are a few issues though.

the main issue is the timeline. not only does it jump around in years but the ages of the characters she notes and the years she dates don't add up. also reading it on audible is hard to keep up with the years switching.

There's a few instances where she doesn't do a good job of supporting the characters. in fact I was halfway through when I realized that the of the names being used, though all described the same, were different people.

in the end, it was anti climatic and very disappointing. as well I was shocked at the similarities between this and elements of cirque de freak.

overall I was very disappointing at the waste of such potential.
