James Allen's From Poverty to Power (1901) and As a Man Thinketh (1902) stand as seminal texts in the self-help genre that have served as sources of inspiration since their publication at the beginning of the 20th century. Loosely based in its principles around the Biblical proverb "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he," As a Man Thinketh asserts the powerful idea that belief is central to bringing about positive events in one's life.

Why can't salesmen sell? And why won't prospects listen? We offer great products to prospects. We say great things to people. We share our vision and passion with others. And they don't buy, they don't believe us, and they don't share our vision and passion. We say great things, but people don't believe us, and they don't trust us. So we don't need more good things to say. Instead, we need to learn how to get people to believe and trust the good things we are saying already.

This is not a realistic book. And, if you approach anyone this way, they probably wouldn't even talk with you for very long, let alone desire to be in rapport with you. Therefore it must have been meant as a tongue in cheek, a joke.
