The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metalminds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate.

As always Branson has given us a story that is rich in character and world, filled with conflict and emotion, and unfortunately, also filled with content that has not appeared in any of his other works that I've read. Modern issues like homosexuality and multiple partners during intimacy crop up but serve no purpose in the story, leading me to think Brandon's publishers have pressured him to write what his readers do not require.

The story is remarkable, and filled with fun, exciting adventure and a nice twist that makes the ending really awesome.

Unfortunately the dialogue is really campy and at several parts nearly drove me to press stop on my audible app and start listening to something else. I'm glad I didn't because the ending was awesome! I don't think I'll be reading this one again, and that pains me because Brandon is like the Lord Ruler to me, only kind not evil.

Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is now on the verge of modernity, with railroads to supplement the canals, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds.Kelsier, Vin, Elend, Sazed, Spook, and the rest are now part of history—or religion. Yet the old magics of Allomancy and Feruchemy continue to play a role in this reborn world....

Very fun read! Big BS fan here! Fresh take on the world of allomancy! Several hundred years after the conclusion of the Mistborn trilogy, and you throw guns and a Wild West spin into that world. What do you get? Brilliance!!

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

Being a HUGE fan of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, I felt that I really needed to get to know Brandon's writing style in hopes that his writing talents would put my mind at ease concerning the fate of the final book that he is writing due to the original author's death. Not only is my mind and heart relieved after completing this series, I believe that I may have found a new favorite author! Brandon, may all of your books be as spellbinding!
