Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

first, let me say that this book was free, I would not have considered buying it! that would have been a great MISTAKE! detective novels seem boring to me, and this book was very confusing at the start. It kept jumping back and forth on the timeline. by the middle I figured out that the author wanted to put you in the shoes of each character during the discovery, but it was disorienting. That being said, it was well written. It did keep me guessing, and at the end you find out why the beginning seemed so odd. The twist is amazing, unforeseen, and a brilliant work. I only docked one star due to the disorientation of jumping back and forth, but I really see no way to avoid it.

"Three knives were buried up to their brass cross guards in the man's chest. Richard recognized the knife handles. All three were the style carried by the men of the First File. He looked from those blades that should have killed the big man, up to his face. That was when he realized the true horror of the situation, and the reason for the unbearable stench of death." Sequel to the #1 New York Times best seller The Omen Machine.

there are several discrepancies in this book, especially if you read/ listen to "the first confessor" first. the biggest problem is that a man that was trapped in the slith's well when the barrier went up could not have written a book and placed it on the other side of a barrier where a people that would long after be banished to and another barrier put up. how would anyone have known to hide a book in the new world as they could never have used the book to complete their goals??? the rest of the story works out well, and the narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life.

I found it odd that a spell created to hide a person from everyone also eases the memory of the one hidden... "I'm a spy for, someone, I think; am I trained?" besides this problem, the rest of the book is good and makes you think. I am getting a feeling that the author my be criticising the Catholic church during the great crusades as a parallel to the order. the narrator did a great job as usual.

As Richard fought to focus his mind on his need to remain conscious, the breathless voices sounded to him as if they were coming from some great, dim distance. He wasn't sure who they were. He knew that he knew them, but right then it just didn't seem to matter. He struggled to put voice to his burning concern, but he couldn't form the words, couldn't get out any more than a gasping moan.

"'You knew they were there, didn't you?' Kahlan asked in a hushed tone as she leaned closer.
