Annoying Production of a Good Story

I like Jack London's writing, I like travelogs, I liked this story.... but this specific production really challenged me to like. The first two or three minutes of each chapter are overlaid with so many sound effects one has to strain to hear the narrative, and throughout the narration is given in this breathless ranting kind of way which makes the author sound like a crazy crank. But if you can ignore that it's an interesting story.

kind of expositional

ehh if you want a slightly more storyline version of the campaign that led to trafalgar than the Wikipedia entry this might be it, but otherwise for a historical fiction book it spent a lot of time in sweeping exposition with little going on than the historic campaign.

since it's not mentioned till the very end of the summary I didn't realize it was a "re imagining" of the story. they basically dumbed down all the dialogue and narration. I suppose that might be good if your intention is for small children to hear it who might have trouble with the original text (not that it's terribly difficult) but being as my whole purpose here was to revisit this classic as an adult I was a bit taken aback by the seemingly lame and uninspired writing until I realized what was afoot

I'm not a sound engineer but even I could tell the recording quality was sub par. and I found the0selection of "masterpieces" to be rather disappointing.

gets a bit mired in every little detail of the protagonists day, notes a bit slowly. and then suddenly bodies are just piling up. in a word, pacing problems. could probably have used the skills of a good editor

I don't like how the narrator tries to put on goofy voices that make people sound like cartoonist caricatures .... but the story is very good.

just a Mishmash of typical Cornwell antics, feels like it's all exposition, a long litany of summary of obscure political maneuverings by people with unpronouncable names. has nearly nothing to do with the king Arthur legends except that he inserted the names of three or four Arthurian characters.
