The Battlemage audiobook cover art

The story was generally good, but the lack of internal thoughts/emotions made it really hard to connect with any of the characters. I had a hard time caring about them throughout this epic journey they were on.

Good story, but too much detail and backstory drags the plot to a crawl at times.

I found the characters a bit difficult to care about and the plot seemed a bit simplistic to me, but it was worth reading just to get to the ending, which was heartfelt and moving enough to make me willing to give the next book a try, assuming there is one.

I didn't check the length before getting this book and was surprised when it was only a few minutes long. In that time, the author managed to introduce me to an intriguing world with a race of humans with interesting duties. I wish it had been longer as I want to learn more about this world and the possibilities the Gingers provide.

Any additional comments?

I thought CJ Critt did a fabulous job of narrating the first several books in this series. Janet does a great job writing, but what on earth possessed her to change the narrator to this Lorelei character? Her voices are too nasally, especially for Grandma Maser, and her guy voices don't sound very much like a guy. Ugh. It's painful listening to this voice and I just realized she's narrated the entire rest of the series. I think I'll check them out at the library instead!

Needed a military advisor

So, the author should have had a good military advisor. At one point it says that a character was busted from Major to Captain which would only be possible if it was a battlefield promotion which in the time frame this was set wouldn't have happened. Otherwise the story flows quite well and brings you along fairly well. I liked the narrator though the production should have been turned up a bit for volume.

I've read this book probably a dozen times in the past 15 years or so and find it as good now as then.
