The year is 1180 A.D. and times are very dark. England is lawless for the most part and the people live in fear. Rising to power during this time is the vicious and brutal knight Ajax de Velt. His mission is to conquer a large stretch of the Scots and Welsh border, commandeering wealth and property along the way. He wants to be the most feared and powerful warlord in all of England, Wales, and Scotland, and he is well on his way.

I must admit, I was a little hesitant to read this book. After all the references to Jax De Velt in other books I was very apprehensive to read his story. I am glad I gritted my teeth and took the chance. This is a well written story. The story of Jax is a great story and it definitely was no where near as gory as I thought it would be. The narration is well done.

Concerned that technology is about to chase mythological creatures out into the open (how long can Sasquatch stay hidden from Google maps?), the League for Interspecies Cooperation is sending Jillian to Louisiana on a fact-finding mission. While the League hopes to hold on to secrecy for a little bit longer, they're preparing for the worst in terms of human reactions. They need a plan, so they look to Mystic Bayou, a tiny town hidden in the swamp where humans and supernatural residents have been living in harmony for generations.

I'm the guy you love to hate. In every story in my life, I seem to end up playing the villain - and I've got the scars to prove it. That role works fine for me, because I'm sure as hell not anyone's hero. I run my life and my empire with an iron fist - until she knocks my tightly controlled world off its axis. She's nobody's damsel in distress, but I can't help but want to save her anyway. I guess we're about to find out if there's a hero buried...beneath these scars.

Once again this is a great book to listen to. It is a bit offsetting to have a male narrator after so many of this series only have a female. It was not bad but different as you are so used to certain voices for the characters. Highly recommend this next book in the series.
