Updike Can Be Infuriating but He’s Still My Favorite

Updike seems to write the same book over and over again and the especially promiscuous behavior of the protagonist in this one made me burst out loud (in my car or on the walking path) several times with cries of exasperation. But Updike is my favorite. He’s always been the best, for me, at capturing the experience of being alive, describing the world and consciousness and memory. There are many gorgeous passages here that I wish I had written down. The narrator read too fast to my liking and I actually slowed this down to .75 speed and that seemed more appropriate.

Loved this performance - I could picture many of the scenes playing out in a film. It’s densely packed with clever Partridge-esque details. Always appreciative of how Coogan can keep mining this character and still keep it fresh and hilarious. You’ll enjoy this audiobook more if you are familiar with the TV series.

I enjoyed this smart book very much - now I want to read (or listen to) everything by Pym. Please, Audible, make more titles available.
