I can't even express how beautiful this story is. It's not just military sci-fi. This is the expression of human nature. Every person on this planet (and beyond) can relate to the struggles these characters (who all feel very real and fleshed out, by the way) face. Do yourself a favor... read this book!

For Meredith Gale, ending her life seems like her only choice, and that choice is the reason she’s dangling by her fingertips from a bridge high above the freezing water of the San Francisco Bay. But someone or some thing has other plans for Meredith, and as her fingers slip from the cold steel of the bridge, a disembodied voice asks her a simple question: “Candidate 13: Do you wish to be saved?” Realizing her mistake too late, Meredith screams “Yes!” and instantly finds herself transported to a mysterious island, alongside hundreds of other Candidates like her.

M.G. Herron gives us a ton of meat to chew on in this series. One of the best parts of audible is getting a whole series for one credit. This is one of those that'll keep you interested start to finish. The use of made up tech/alien artifacts never feels contrived and carries the reader into a world filled with modern and ancient cultures reminiscent of (the feel of) Star Wars. Don't misunderstand... there's nothing Star Warsy about this series—its just the new and old mesh that's so great in both.

Tess Irondale reads beautifully and engages the listener with a performance to remember.

Pick it up. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Mounting conflict. Higher stakes. Book three did something I didn't think possible: it got better than 1 and 2. Winds of War was incredible, but Book three does so much to grow characters. I've seen people complain a bit in book 1 reviews (web of eyes) that there wasn't enough character development. They failed to realize the authors thoughtfully calculated this series to build steadily without overwhelming the reader. This is like a great season on Netflix or something. Beautifully done.

Bravo!

It began on New Year's Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world's population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max.

I don’t generally read descriptions. I didn’t realize this was a post apocalyptic tale, so I almost quit listening. I’ve heard such great things about it I had to try. I’m glad I did. The story is deep and well planned.

Will I listen to book two? Probably not. But only because this isn’t my preferred genre.
