Mystery-book aficionado Birdie Lindberg has an overactive imagination. Raised in isolation and homeschooled by strict grandparents, she's cultivated a whimsical fantasy life in which she plays the heroic detective and every stranger is a suspect. But her solitary world expands when she takes a job the summer before college, working the graveyard shift at a historic Seattle hotel. In her new job, Birdie hopes to blossom from introverted dreamer to brave pioneer, and gregarious Daniel Aoki volunteers to be her guide.

I was dubious this could be interesting over 12 hours, but Bennett orchestrated interesting characters in a cool setting (Seattle) and deftly wove in neat subplots. The narration was spot on, clever and compelling without forcing different voices for different characters. Loved it.

Bachelor: A desirable potential boyfriend. AKA not Cole Kingston. Seventeen-year-old Madison (Madi) Matthews wants nothing to do with the dating competition her school is holding to raise money for charity. She's never been interested in chasing a guy before, and she certainly isn't interested in competing for one in front of the whole school. But, when Madi is voted as one of the 10 "lucky" contestants, she's given no choice but to vie for the heart of Lincoln High's most eligible bachelor. The problem is, they've chosen the wrong guy.

The male narrator didn't fit the role. To be kind, he sounded like a doofus, and his female voices were just ... Parodies. By contrast, the female narrator was great. And the contrast make 'Utah' even more discordant. The end got a little ridiculous, as these books sometimes do, in the oh-just-one-simple-conversation-will-clear-everything-up way. Still, liked it quite a bit.

Talking to other people isn't Kate Bailey's favorite activity. She'd much rather be out on the lake, soaking up the solitude and sunshine. So when her best friend, Alana, convinces Kate to join their high school's podcast, Kate is not expecting to be chosen as the host. Now she'll have to answer calls and give advice on the air? Impossible. Then the podcast gets a call from an anonymous guy, asking for advice about his unnamed crush. Kate is pretty sure that the caller is gorgeous Diego Martinez, and even surer that the girl in question is Alana.

This is almost a parody of history. The writing is florid, melodramatic and often vague. The performance also is also melodramatic, like a parody of bad Shakespeare. The poor writing makes understanding the history a chore, and puts the reader on guard to separate the sloppy suppositions from the facts. I have read or listened to perhaps two dozen history books in recent years, and this ranks at the bottom by far.

What do you do when you find your best friend/crush kissing your other best friend on the day you were going to declare your feelings for him? You only agree to fake date your crush's rival. The King of the Bows, popular golden (play)boy, and all around douche, Xander wouldn't be my last choice for a boyfriend. Across the school, battlelines are drawn, and sides are taken between the new "it" couple of my former best friends and the excitingly scandalous pairing of me and King Douche.

I like the performance and liked the sophistication of the dialogue, but the plot was about self-involved people who were obsessed with their non problems. Endless parking then, rehashing feeling and repeating the same thought and actions and mistakes until you just wanted to scream: shut up! Stop thinking! Make a damn choice! Sorry I didn't chuck it mid way through.

Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

This is truly junk writing. Blathering, repetitious, jumbled and like a regurgitation of story fragments and Internet surfing. I quit with four hours to when I didn’t even want to listen at the gym. Which is a very low bar for me. Narration is in the same bored tone as the writing.

Classic movie buff Bailey "Mink" Rydell has spent months crushing on a witty film geek she only knows online by "Alex". Two coasts separate the teens until Bailey moves in with her dad, who lives in the same California surfing town as her online crush. Faced with doubts (what if he's a creep in real life - or worse?), Bailey doesn't tell Alex she's moved to his hometown. Or that she's landed a job at the local tourist-trap museum. Or that she's being heckled daily by the irritatingly hot museum security guard, Porter Roth - a.k.a. her new arch-nemesis.

For a longer book, it kept my interest with few gratuitous plot lines. The main characters remain fun and confident despite their issues, and the setting was a great character in itself. There is sex, and it's handled in an indirect way that seems in keeping with the story, but still adds a nice splash of passion. I highly recommend this book, and only marked down the narration because while it was good, it wasn't age appropriate - it made the characters sound like they were in their 20's, not their teens.
