The nominal king, Edward VI, is 11 years old. His uncle, Edward Seymour, Lord Hertford, rules as Edward's regent and Protector. In the kingdom, radical Protestants are driving the old religion into extinction, while the Protector's prolonged war with Scotland has led to hyperinflation and economic collapse. Rebellion is stirring among the peasantry. Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry's younger daughter, the lady Elizabeth.

It was a crime of senseless violence. On a cold night in a remote Swedish farmhouse, an elderly farmer was bludgeoned to death, his wife left to die with a noose around her neck. As if this didn't present enough problems for Ystad police inspector Kurt Wallander, the dying woman's last word, his only tangible clue, were foreign. If publicized, they could be the match that would inflame Sweden's already smoldering anti-immigrant sentiments.

An unbearably tense novel of revenge, murder, bereavement and the destructive force of passion. The single-mother families of the isolated community under the shadow of the Pyderhorn, Bergen's greatest mountain, are being terrorised by a teenage gang. But teenage violence is nothing compared to what awaits detective Varg Veum when he gets to know the blue-eyed Wenche Andersen.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the story and the narration. I have always enjoyed Davina Porter as a narrator. My genre is historical fiction which is how this was described to me. It is at least 70% soft core porn and by definition, a romance novel. If that is your genre, you will not be disappointed.

A shot rang out. The Arabs surged forward under a savage fusillade of heavy fire. Nearer and nearer they came, shouting with hate and blood-lust. Geste rushed up and down his side of the roof, pausing only long enough to load his rifle and fire into the shrieking mob below, hoping to trick the Arabs into believing the fort was heavily manned.

Davina Porter's men's voices are so feminine that there is no suspension of disbelief for me, but I've listened to nine books narrated by her so I clearly like her well enough.

Damn her for dying! Ariana Franklin has become not just my favorite historical fiction author but my favorite author ever.

The book? Wonderful historical fiction that makes you feel like you are there. Brilliant characters, all complex and compelling. Her villains are always very disturbing and vile. The first person narrative moves around so you get both outside and inside perspectives, s technique I loved. This brilliant book is matched by the perfect narration by Kate Reading - simply amazing.

Enjoy! And then go listen to all her other books - they are all equally great.

I wasn't sure Kenneth Branagh was going to do this justice - he can be a little over emphatic and lofty sometimes. I was wrong, he lowered his tempo and adopted a more common voice that fit the characters beautifully.
