The Art of Fermentation
- An In-Depth Exploration of Essential Concepts and Processes from Around the World
- By: Sandor Ellix Katz
- Narrated by: Sean Crisden
- Length: 20 hrs and 16 mins
The Art of Fermentation is the most comprehensive guide to do-it-yourself home fermentation ever published. Sandor Ellix Katz presents the concepts and processes behind fermentation in ways that are simple enough to guide listeners through their first experience making sauerkraut, and in-depth enough to provide greater understanding for experienced practitioners. While Katz contextualizes fermentation in terms of biological and cultural evolution, nutrition, and even economics, this is primarily a compendium of practical information.

Using up before it rots
Since I essentially live alone, I often buy more than I can use. The Art of Fermentation shows me how to become healthier (from pre-and probiotics produced) and not add to the landfill of unused food.
While the idea and story of making alcoholic beverages such as Meade and hard cider was interesting to me – I don’t know that I will also partake in that. So much knowledge in this book! Such a worthy listen.

I would recommend this for young people and adults – I think that mature preteens might even get a lot out of this. I agree she sounded like “poor me” here and there. Yet it gets her point across about how to overcome adversity.
