His associations may be unsavory, but money, friends, and infamy open far more interesting doors than respect ever could. His sole regret? Once lovely, sweet Daisy Whitlaw learned the truth about how he made his fortune, she cut him off. The story of Louisa Mae Cardinal and her family is one of the most moving books I have read in a long, long time. Set in the 1940's... the book was a historical treasure of references and lifestyle for this family living in the Virginia mountains. Mr. Baldacci is a master storyteller taking me from tears to laughter to many remembrances of my own youth and childhood visits with my grandparents. Excellent writing... magnificent story.

As a social worker, mother, foster parent, adoptive parent, and child of parents who fostered in the 1960's... I feel this story bears witness to the unbelievable bonds of family and the primal needs to stay connected to family... not at all that children and adoptive families cannot also bond, for they can ... but honoring a child's roots is a very necessary gift to the child. I could hardly put down this book, ghastly as some parts were... because reading and learning about the maltreatment of children is not joyful reading... but the resiliency of children and families was well defined in this writing. An excellent look into the history of substitute care... a must read for every child welfare professional.
