Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

First time I’ve read this author and I can’t wait for more now. I hope there are more Gillard books. This one kept me guessing til nearly the end which I loved. Very cleverly written plot and the narrator is great.

I am halfway through this book and the narration is driving me crazy. So much so I feel compelled to review now before I’ve finished. It is totally spoiling the book for me. I don’t want to be mean and I know it must be difficult to have voices for each character but oh noooo it’s just awful. Joe sounds like the village idiot and everyone else sounds gruff and gormless Sorry to say I would never buy another book narrated by this lady.

A young local student has apparently committed suicide. Her body is found in an abandoned car on a lonely country road. She didn't own a car. Didn't even drive. How did she get there? Where did she die? Who moved her, and why? Meanwhile a man in his 60s is found dead in a gully up on the wild moorland. He is wearing an expensive suit and carrying no identification. Post-mortem findings indicate he died from injuries sustained during the fall. But what was he doing up there? And why are there no signs of a car in the vicinity?

I have read all the DCI Banks books and loved every one of them but this one disappointed me. I figured out the plot very early on in the book so it was all a bit “ho hum” and there is far too much reference to his music. I got sick of hearing about what he was listening to and what he was drinking. Just not up to his usual standards in my opinion. Will it stop me listening to his books. ? No way but hope the next one is more gripping.

This is my second book by this author. The first one I read and enjoyed but this audio book is driving me crazy and I can't wait to finish it. The narrator is awful. Sorry but she has totally spoiled it for me. The tone of her voice is painful. She reads the whole the Ng as if she's really really sad. Regardless of which character is speaking. I would never buy another book with her as a narrator.
