I'm writing this review because I felt the reviews posted were unfair. This is a solid grim dark series. There is a lot of violence, I think that is what turned people off. For me the story is set in a world where life is cheap so the violence fits. My favs are GOT and Joe Abercrombie. This series is less compelling but good. Definitely worth a try if you enjoyed stories sim. to above.

it was a coming of age story. excellent narration and good writing just too long for a coming of age story.

spoiler alert
I kept hope the second half of the book was going to take place in the stories present. I got a little bored.

it's an ok military thriller. I felt like the 1st book was more believable but maybe it's just hindsight. I am disappointed when the story makes a good operator in a superhero. it gets old.

Better than many I've read. too short though I'm not sure I will finish the series at the price per book. if that had a publishers pack with 2 or 3 books I'd be all over it.

At first I thought it was above average with weapons and tactics but it is not. Armored plates made of titanium, M2 used as a hand weapon, every good guy armed with an MP7 , etc.
That said the bar is pretty low. I just wish authors would do a little more research on the tactical side.

I do like that it's not 1 guy vs everyone. Superheroes are for comic books, this story does have multiple subplots and characters which you would expect in world events.

The series continues to be in the upper percentile for military space sci-fi. To many series are call military space operas and are inconsistent at best militarily. this series has tactics and characters that are believable. I'm not a navy guys and dont know much about actual naval tactics but at least the characters dont fo anything obviously stupid tactically.

I have been on the fence about starting this series and I am glad I pulled the trigger. If you like the military and futuristic gadgets part of sci-fi I think this is a good start. So many in the genre ignore the tactical part of space battles and the characters make stupid decisions which may get the story line where it needs to be but doesn't make sense tactically. So far the book series seems like it's in the top 25% for what I like in a military space opera. I hope this helped.
The narrator is a good fit for the story in my opinion. He reads a little fast but it was not an issue for me.
