This mystery starts off slow, but by the end it’s humming. Very entertaining and well written. The author jumps back and forth through time, but it’s not annoying and really keeps the suspense going.

Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig. It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview - to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right? I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they...offered me the job? It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild.

My daughter and I had fun listening to this story of a sassy young woman stumbling into the middle of the supernatural world. However, I wish that the narrator had been better. Tory, the main character comes off as bitchy and the narrators inflection aids in that. Plus she sucks at accents.

Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

I grew up a non Morman in Centerville, Utah. It was not until I read Dr. Westover extremely well written book that deals with community, family and the effects of ignorance, mental disorders and being ostracized from a small community - that I was able to step back and see what effects all of that had on me growing up. I am a huge admirer of this woman. It is a shame her parents don’t see her for the genius that she is and how she has enriched our world.
