The Ottoman world was nothing like an exotic fairy tale featuring tyrant sultans, mean pashas, and ill-fated harem women. The true stories of genuine sultans and princes are a bit more complicated and no less exciting. Incredible facts about this empire still surprise anyone who starts discovering those stories. You’ll find out that, for quite a while, this Islamic state was effectively ruled by women, and that’s just the beginning.

The book is well written with the full scope of the country's history covered. Endnotes are lacking which is a weakness, but it has an adequate bibliography and index. His treatment of the Mexicans is impartial given them the benefit of the doubt as they are of a different mindset formed by centuries of culture and civilization totally unrelated to the Anglo-Saxon. The one question that is left unanswered is how two cultures that are totally different can co-exist in one country. We will know the answer very soon.

The given title tells the stories in an interesting way, and that there were a plethora of versions for each as history or myth to each little batch of people in the region, and that these versions were constantly being re-written as was all of human mythology, this is an interesting and factually consistent view of these stories morphed over hundreds of years from strict history and tall tales both into the versions that were finally sieved into the audible format as we know it.
