Doremus Jessup, a newspaper editor, is dismayed to find how many people he knows support presidential candidate Berzelius Windrip. The suspiciously fascist Windrip is offering to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press. But after Windrip wins the election, dissent soon becomes dangerous for Jessup.

This book shows just how easily things get out of control when the wrong people are elected. Written in the 1930's to draw people's attention to what was happening in Germany and Italy where the voters gave away more and more of their rights to candidates who promised to protect them.
President Berzelius Windrip is elected promising to save us ...(them)...and very cleverly take control of the Supreme Court and other branches of government and turns the US into a totalitarian state before anything can be done about it.
The scary thing is it can happen here. Read or listen to It Can't Happen Here and then register to vote because it can happen here. It happened in Lousiana under Huey P Long, it almost happened to the US under Nixon and it might happen in 2016 if we're not careful.

This is one of those stories where we know who the bad guy is in the first chapter so as the name implies it is one long chase scene. There are no twists or surprises but it is entertaining enough that I bought the next three books in the series before I finished this one.

Once a hotshot investigative reporter, Jack Tagger now bangs out obituaries for a South Florida daily, “plotting to resurrect my newspaper career by yoking my byline to some famous stiff.” Jimmy Stoma, the infamous front man of Jimmy and the Slut Puppies, dead in a fishy-smelling scuba “accident,” might be the stiff of Jack’s dreams - if only he can figure out what happened. Standing in the way are (among others) his ambitious young editor, who hasn’t yet fired anyone but plans to “break her cherry” on Jack....

I choose this version because it is read by Carl Hiaasen himself. I'm always willing to take a chance when I see that the writer in the narrator. Mr Hiaasen does a fairly good job. He is kind of deadpan throughout but his delivery works with the story.
If you are a fan of Hiaasen you might want the unabridged version (I've read both). While this abridgment is fairly good (and I've heard some bad ones) in shortening the story they took out much character development which is Hiaasen's long suit. I really missed this but felt the story flowed well without it.

I hope I spelled that right.
This is the second set of units in pimslur's German course and I'm continuing to make progress. At this point I think I could ask any german speaking person to have a drink (wine, beer or coffee) with me at their or my place. So singles take note.

At the end of lesson 10 there is a written component at the end of each lesson; they recommend that you don't do this portion of the lesson while driving and I agree. There is an issue with accompanying PDF. You will need to download it from the page for unit 1-5 as it is incomplete from this page

I was impressed enough to buy the next two units (06-10, 11-15)

The astonishing story of Benny Binion - a rip-roaring saga of murder, money, and the making of Las Vegas. Benny Binion was many things: a cowboy, a pioneering casino owner, a gangster, a killer, and founder of the hugely successful World Series of Poker. Blood Aces tells the story of Binion's crucial role in shaping modern Las Vegas. From a Texas backwater, Binion rose to prominence on a combination of vision, determination, and brutal expediency.

The image of Benny Binion that was portrayed in Vegas after his death was that he was a friendly old gambler cattle rancher who owed a casino or two. A lot of people, both locals and tourists, believed it too.
Blood Aces shows a different side of Binion. In his early years Benny was the kind of man who would have people killed for getting in the way of his illegal gambling operations in Texas before relocating to Las Vegas.
While the book does cover Binion's conviction for Tax Fraud in the 1950's and the period that the Horseshoe was owned by Joe W. Brown I would have liked a little more detail on this.

I have listened to a number of titles by Ken Follett and enjoyed them all but I kind of got the feeling he was being paid by the word with this one. Early in the book there is a chapter where one of the characters is learning to fly a plane. The description of every little nuance went on so long that I forgot where I was in the story. The entire book is filled with sections like this that do more to take away from the action rather than add to it.

I tend to be a little leary when someone claims to have made the bible flow as one continuous story but I think they knocked it out of the park with this one. The narration, dramatization, and back ground music all work together to make The Story an enjoyable and meaningful experience. I highly recommend it but I suggest that you buy the complete version; I bought 2 single chapters to make sure I liked it, but turned right around and bought the rest after one listen.
