After the end of her marriage, Kate Granger has retreated to her parents' home on Lake Superior to pull herself together - only to discover the body of a murdered woman washed into the shallows. Tucked in the folds of the woman's curiously vintage gown is an infant, as cold and at peace as its mother. No one can identify the woman. Except for Kate. She's seen her before. In her dreams...

In 1919 Kitty Weekes - pretty, resourceful, and on the run – falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability in what was once a magnificent private estate, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis House - its plaster is crumbling; its plumbing makes eerie noises; and strange, cold breaths of air waft through the empty rooms.

Once again, Simone St. James does a wonderful job of mixing healing and romance with creepy ghosts. She gives us a little look into how mentally ill soldiers where treated after WWI while providing an intriguing mystery centered on spine-tingling spirits. I love how her characters are wounded people -- either from childhood, the war, or both -- that heal through facing some really scary situations.

The narrator does a great job of voicing both men and women. She gives Kitty's voice the personality I hear in the words.

I just learned to never, ever read Simone St. James books once the sun goes down.

Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she's a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn't help. Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie's ordinariness is an asset.

I'm listening to this series for the third time. It is one I run to when I need a time-out from the daily ick. I find is light, sweet and enjoyable. The characters, major and minor, are lovely. I chuckle regularly, especially with the antics of the villain. Though slow to build, the romance is adorable. An added bonus, being from Texas, I really appreciate the way Katie looks at New York.

Take a listen if you need a little vacation from real life!

The McCready Family Funeral Home and Bait Shop has crickets running rampant in the store and hot sauce in the Snack Shack's ketchup bottles. But as the county coroner, Frankie has enough on her plate without worrying about the increasingly mean pranks being played at her family's business. And the arrival of Sheriff Eric Linden, both devastatingly attractive and painfully taciturn, is enough to push her over the edge.

Having been raised in a small Texas town, this book takes me back to my childhood. The colloquialisms, the attitudes, the small town past times are all right on. The characters are entertaining and, in their own ways, noble. The mystery is pretty challenging as well. Great read all around.
