It's the end of oil. We knew it was coming one day. But it happened so fast! Devlin Quinn turns 16 the same week that a battle in a distant war shuts off the flow of imported petroleum to the US. Gas runs low, then runs out, and soon the highways are empty. And then it gets very serious. The grocery store shelves are empty, and people become desperate for food. Dev is trained to fight-his father made sure of that-but is he trained enough? Smart enough? Tough enough? He is about to find out when people desperate for food flee the burning cities and attack....

For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

In an impossible situation, our story of a mini ice age starts with hopefulness spanning to heartbreak. How will Bishop and the others survive impossible odds as they seek to bring those they love to shelter. And is the Osprey, and all those on board, truly gone forever? How will Jax and the others make their way on such a perilous journey? The brutality of survival in this post-apocalyptic world leaves little hope for humanity after the Maunder Minimum. Perhaps they're lost after all.

Not a bad book. The characters had a sense of humor but the whole story was like a trip to the zoo instead of the end of the world. They seem to have everything they needed all the time. Being someone who is in deep with aviation, the whole plane ordeal was VERY faulty. Real Swiss cheese in the facts.

Nine months after the outbreak, 10,000 survivors from across the globe have found a refuge on the Welsh island of Anglesey. Hordes of the undead ravage the wastelands of Britain and Ireland. Satellite images show that the rest of the world is no better. Food, fuel, and ammunition are running low and there are no more old-world supplies with which to replace them. Intended as an alternative to a slide into despotism, an election is called. It is hoped the contest will bring forth solutions to the myriad crises facing this last bastion of humanity.

Within hours of the first outbreak, Manhattan was overrun by the living dead. Within a few days, the undead had reached every corner of the globe. There was no evacuation of Northern Ireland, and no quarantine in the Republic. A naval blockade prevented ships from docking, but they didn't prevent those who could reach the coast from fleeing by sea. Those who were left behind took refuge in castles, police stations, churches, military bases, and any other buildings with strong walls.
