After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. One of these cases where I don’t get the five star reviews. The writing and narration are OK at best. The alternate universe story is not a new one. Nor the story within a story. And it is always annoying when the protagonist is not aware of his situation when most of us have it figured it out pages ago.
And the giant killer frogs? Maybe the author was trying to make the point that this current reality was wearing thin. Or maybe it was just time for an action sequence. Don’t get me wrong there were some good sections. But lets’ be honest in the star ratings. This is not Uber where anything less than a five star review is considered an insult.

Would you listen to another book narrated by MacLeod Andrews?

MacLeod Andrews does a decent job with bad material. I would listen to him again.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed with the generic pedestrian writing.

And All the Devils Are Here

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Hell is Empty is definitely one the best audio books I've listened to this year. The book initially struck me as all action with the characters we grown to know sidelined. But then the action turns into something more. It turns into some kind of journey through hell. Though hell is a frozen mountain. And hell has a seven foot tall guide that may be real or just a hallucination.
The Walt Longmire series is usually very down to earth. Hell is Empty may not be as firmly rooted in reality but I will listen to this one again.

If you liked the ending to the last episode of The Sopranos you'll like the ending to The Passage. I have to assume there is a second volume coming. Other than the cliff hanger ending I did enjoy the book. It works great as something to listen to on a cross country car trip.

Historical Novel?

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 04-05-10

More a historical novel than science fiction, Galileo's Dream covers the latter half of Galileo's life. While there are some action scenes this is not an action novel. And while there is time travel and alien intelligence, it is more a novel of about Galileo, his scientific ideas, and Vatican politics. If you make it through the twenty hours you will gain a understanding and an affection for this flawed genius. It does go on for too long. It could stand being about a third shorter. But I would recommend it for an entertaining introduction to the life of Galileo Galilee.

Entertaining novel with deadpan delivery

Overall
4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 07-13-04

Except for the Elmore Leonard novels that have made it into film, this is my first of his novels and I am looking forward to reading some of his other books. The story is fast and entertaining. Robert Forster's reading of the novel is as dry as dry gets. Imagine a no nonsense kind of guy telling a long story. It takes a while to get used to his pacing and his subtle sense of humor. After a short while I found myself thoroughly enjoying his deadpan delivery. I can see where other listeners may not care for his understated performance but I've listened to the book twice.
