In the Vietnam War, American "rough riders" drove trucks through hostile territory delivering supplies, equipment, ammunition, weapons, fuel, and reinforcements to troops fighting on the war's ever-shifting front lines. But, all too often, the convoys themselves became the front lines. Frank McAdams, a Marine Corps lieutenant, learned that the hard way during a tour of duty that began right after the 1968 Tet Offensive and the siege at Khe Sanh.

Throughly enjoyed this book. I served in Viet Nam from 1971 to 1972 and rode in convoys through the Hai Van Pass numerous times.

Joseph Sherman first visits Saigon, the capital of French colonial Cochin-China, in 1925 on a hunting expedition with his father, a US senator. He is lured back again and again as a traveler, a soldier, and then as a reporter by his fascination for the exotic land and for Lan, a mandarin's daughter he cannot forget. Over five decades, Joseph's life becomes enmeshed with the political intrigues of two of Saigon's most influential families, the French colonist Devrauxs, and the native Trans - and inevitably with Vietnam's turbulent, war torn fate.

Having served in Viet Nam, I instantly got caught up in the story. Tragic characters and events abound. Much like the main character, I can't seem to get the place out of my mind.

This ranks as one of the best books available about the Vietnam War from an ordinary soldier's point of view. A must read book. The author has captured the essence of that experience and that time in our history!

As a Viet Nam veteran, I found the author's disparaging remarks about soldiers who served in non-infantry roles offensive. We all had jobs to do over there. I spent six months running convoy security and four months as an infantryman. To me anyone who served there, whether they were in the rear with the gear or out pounding the bush deserves respect.

Further, this book needs some serious editing. Lots of repetitive statements. The narrator also was bad.

From the day Caitlin vanishes the lives of her family members are irrevocably altered, each assuming blame for that day's tragic events. As the initial days of hope are replaced by weeks of anxiety and despair, they find themselves increasingly isolated, each wondering: Is she still alive? Will we ever know what happened?
