Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

Journalist Rick Bragg has built a soaring monument to the grandfather he never knew, and in the process created a powerfully intimate piece of American history as it was experienced by the working people of the deep South, a glorious record of a life of character, tenacity and indomitable joy, and an unforgettable tribute to a vanishing culture.

I’m kicking myself for not reading this sooner. I have the signed paperback, but listening on Audible is the next best thing because the author himself is the narrator. I finished it yesterday, but it was so good I’m listening to it again today. This seriously should be made into a movie. Thank you, Rick Bragg, for telling our story.

This book was recommended professionally and lived up to every positive review. However, the real value comes from doing the work which required pausing, rewinding, taking notes, etc. Perfectly fine if you are sitting at a desk ready to answer questions, but not great for a long commute.
