People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

This was such a fun listen...I really enjoyed it. I'm not a big fan of hearing the F-bomb over and over, sometimes I stop listening because of the language, but I had to keep listening to the end! Great listen but not for kids.

After the death of her adoptive mother, Ava Saunders comes upon a peculiar photograph, sealed and hidden away in a crawl space. The photo shows a shuttered, ramshackle house on top of a steep hill. On the back, a puzzling inscription: Destiny calls us. Ava is certain that it's a clue to her elusive past. Twenty-three years ago, she'd been found wrapped in a yellow blanket in the narthex of the Holy Saviour Catholic Church - and rescued - or so she'd been told. Her mother claimed there was no more to the story.

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. Where does Amid the Shadows rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was a top notch book that I will probably listen to again. It seems to have everything, love, hate, war, faith and faithlessness. The last chapters were captivating.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was the description of the paratroopers preparing to go into the battle.

Any additional comments?

This book had an unusual perspective when compared with the usual "good vs evil' stories and lots of action which kept things interesting.

What did you like best about Ashley Bell? What did you like least?

There is an interesting concept for the story but it took a long time to figure out exactly what the concept was. I've listened to many of Koontz's books and loved them, I'm not sure what happened here. There were a lot of minor characters that popped in at odd times and nothing made much sense until the ends get knitted together at the end of the book.

Has Ashley Bell turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, and I will probably still listen to Koontz. Hopefully this book was just a fluke.

Have you listened to any of Suzy Jackson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

Do you think Ashley Bell needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

NO!

Any additional comments?

Love Dean Koontz...just not THIS book.
