My name is Jemma Blackburn, and I'm a Slayer. Finding out I wasn't human was only the beginning of my problems. My best friend, Taylor, is still missing, and so is the Immortal Amulet, and it's my job alone to get them both back. I don't know who I can trust, and I'm still not sure I'm cut out for any of this, but I'm determined to figure it all out, or die trying. As if that wasn't bad enough, there's a new enemy in town and they've come bearing gifts - an ancient prophecy that is going to blur the very lines between good and evil. And, apparently, my blood is tied to the center of it.

My name is Jemma Blackburn, and I have a secret. I know vampires are real. I watched one murder my father eight months ago, and even though they tried to convince me it didn't happen - that I'd lost touch with reality due to the trauma, I know what I saw was real. Hollow Hills is now the place I call home. It was supposed to be my chance at a normal life. My chance to bury my secret and start over.

Aged Mother Jilo is wise in the ways of magic...but once upon a time, she was just a girl. 1950s Georgia: King Cotton has fallen. Savannah is known as the "beautiful woman with a dirty face," its stately elegance faded by neglect, its soul withering from racial injustice and political corruption. Young Jilo - fiercely independent, intelligent, and ambitious, but thwarted by Savannah's maddeningly genteel version of bigotry - finds herself forced to embrace a dark power that has pursued her family for generations, an ancient magic that may prove her salvation.

I really struggled to finish this book after reading the first three. This one serves as background for the previous books. It has a completely different feel, tempo, and narrator.

My rating would likely have been quite different had it not followed, but rather lead the series. Perhaps even if I hadn't listened to all of them back to back.

As it is, it just didn't do much for me.

I've been listening to the series back to back. I've enjoyed them for the most part. There is a lot of time spent re-telling information in previous books. I suppose that is fine if there's a gap in time between listening to each of them. I can almost overlook that recurring issue in all of the books of the series (not just this one).

This book, however, spent so much time describing clothing and preparations for the wedding I almost gave up on it entirely. I can't really understand why so much time was devoted to it and all of the details about it. One more clothing, food, or morning sickness description and I would not have been able to finish!

Once past that very over-long portion the book was much like the others. Not a great series, but, overall entertaining enough to go on to the next book.

Bo Blackman is a rookie private investigator working for the London based firm of Dire Straits. She doesn't often get triber-based assignments, which is just as well. Vampires and daemons don't interest her as much as humans do... However, when she has to serve a summons on a dodgy daemon called Devlin O'Shea and she ends up saving his life instead of being framed for his murder, her life takes a shocking turn for the worse.

I've enjoyed the previous books in this series. This one, however, was not the same at all. It follows High School students in their life, peer struggles, with some supernatural thrown in. There was, eventually, a little interaction with characters in the other books. I struggled to get through it even though I could see where it would intersect with the story line, but, I was very disappointed overall. I hope the next book goes back to the main plot and people.

After reading some of the previous posted reviews that say that this book is very confusing I strongly considered not starting this series by J.Frank. However, since I really enjoyed all of the books in her "Nightwalker" series I figured I take a chance. I was very happily surprised! I had no trouble following the story line nor keeping track of the characters. I think if you liked the Nightwalker series you'll probably enjoy this book/series. It seemed like a good beginning into a similar "world". I just purchased the rest of the "World of Nightwalker" series books.
