The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives - resenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.

It’s so difficult to write a review without giving too much away. I purchased this book on a whim due to reading best rated/reviewed books. The first chapter had me a bit worried that it wasn’t something I would normally enjoy but I was entranced by the narrator. She is phenomenal. I could listen to her all day....and I did a few times during this book. The character development and plot twists were superb, but the vocabulary and authors ability to paint such a vivid picture, without droning on and on, was the star here. I can’t help but try harder to speak more eloquently because of this book. I want more.

Turned out of her ancestral home by her vicious half brother, the orphaned daughter of an English duke and a French noblewoman makes her way to Paris and takes in abused French streetwalkers, transforming them into sought-after courtesans in the city's most exclusive bordello, Le Boudoir. It is only the beginning of her return to the upper reaches of society and ultimate justice.

While I really enjoyed this story initially, the way the author continued to remind us how beautiful Angelique is and how smart she is and how people are drawn to her and want to be near her was very repetitive. I understand that in the beginning it is necessary to help set the tone of the story and to repeat it again later for certain situations is one thing, but every time a new characters relationship was discussed the entire thing was repeated over and over. Otherwise the story was grand and wonderful...the ending, superb.
I really enjoyed this narrator and enjoyed his many voices for the various characters. I have had quite a bit of experience with audio books in the past that have not been this pleasant.
