In high school, I was on the varsity tennis team for two years. The only reason I was on varsity was because we had no JV team; that was the low interest in tennis. So I earned letters, so to speak, but I never really got very good at tennis.

This book is a pretty comprehensive look at tennis and how to improve your game. It talks about everything from nutrition to racket grip to keeping up overall fitness and mentally preparing to play. Two things I found most helpful: 1) The discussion of grip. My tennis coach was always harping at us about our grip; tennis rackets are a funny thing, and if you hold them wrong, it can throw off your whole game. People don't realize this, and it's good that the book brings it up. 2) Mental preparedness. I get nervous when I play sports, and tennis is so focused on the individual athlete that nerves can get the better of you. You're not on a field with 10 teammates; you're alone, and everyone is watching you. This book has good tips for controlling your nerves and staying focused. Recommended.

I'm an atheist. I'll throw that out there. But I have friends who tell me their spirituality saved them, made them better people, made them happier, helped them get through life a little easier. And I thanked them, and I scoffed. But I decided to look into what "spirituality" actually means, and I decided to check this book out.

Self-awareness, self-acceptance, and patience - these are some of the things this book covers. It's not so much about higher power; it's more about becoming in tune with yourself and being good to yourself and others.

The self-awareness portion was probably the best part, because I think it sets up everything else that comes after it. There are even exercises in the book - free association used to learn about yourself. The author asks you to write down your thoughts and emotions and ask some important questions, and write a "short story" of your life - I really enjoyed that task, and it did increase self-awareness without feeling like much effort. I also enjoyed the discussion of how nature and culture are important to maintaining your spirit and staying positive.

This book is not about religion - it's about yourself, and how to be your best "you", and it was definitely worthwhile. Highly recommended.

This box set is a great deal for someone looking to maximize their marketing efforts using social media. I'm currently in the process of trying to get more clients, and I find the use of social media for marketing purposes a little baffling. Here, there is useful information about not just Facebook and Twitter, but also YouTube, which I think is often overlooked as a marketing tool and which works well with the other social media platforms. These books teach not just how to use these platforms to market yourself, but also how to integrate all your social media and optimize its performance. Highly recommended for an entrepreneur or small business owner to get started with internet marketing.

This book covers a lot of ground - the science of sleep, the stages of sleep, the benefits and burdens - what happens when you sleep too much or not enough. It also talks about what can affect sleep hygiene, such as medical conditions like ADHD (which I have), Alzheimer's, MS and epilepsy.

I have a sleep disorder myself on top of my adult ADHD, and I have had two sleep studies done without success. I found this book was full of helpful tips; I know some of them work (I do sleep better when my room is clean, for example, and after drinking herbal tea). Worthwhile for those who are trying to learn how to get a better night's sleep. Right now, even when I do sleep, I don't usually feel rested. It's an ongoing problem from childhood, and I've just sort of learned to live with it. Now, I look forward to trying out the suggestions in this book.

Football is a complicated and physically demanding game, and this is a great book for people looking to get into playing. I personally don't plan to find a football team anytime soon, but I am actively trying to learn more about the sport, and the strategies discussed in this book can lend a better understanding of football's general rules and strategies (the holidays are coming up, and I'd like to be able to talk about football with my pops).

The book goes into the basics, from safety and stretching to conditioning and training to choosing equipment, and then into the rules of the game and the roles of the players (don't know what a tight end does? Now you will!). Ultimately it discusses different moves and routes and what types of plays may bring the best results for the different positions. Finally, it talks about the importance of nutrition and mental preparedness. Overall, a very comprehensive look at football with some tips on safety and diet that will be useful to anyone considering any sport.

Poker Strategy & Preparation Perfect for Novices

I’ve always shied away from poker at casinos, because it felt like luck played too much of a part in the outcome. I’m a Blackjack person myself – I understand it well enough to know how much strategy can affect your game in addition to luck. Poker, however, always seemed ruled more by luck than anything else, and yet people have made careers out of playing it. I’m planning a trip to Vegas, and I wanted to find information that might be helpful to someone who doesn’t really play poker, and I found this one to be pretty good.

This book is quite comprehensive, so I think it’s great for novices. It describes not just what to do during gameplay, but also how to prepare. It gives advice on become a more focused person generally so that, once you begin to play, you can use those skills to observe your opponents and keep an eye on the cards. The book also gives preparation suggestions, such as going to poker forums on the internet and finding a poker mentor, and also practicing online and in casinos. I particularly found it helpful that the book talks about casino etiquette. I’m not new to casinos, but I don’t go often, and it’s easy to forget the little things that can get you sniped at by the dealer or glared at by the pit boss. The book then goes into detail about what you can actually do during the game, plus strategies – bluffing, avoiding giving tells, observing tells in others, slow play, knowing when to raise/call/fold, etc. It even talks about the different types of poker players and how to play against them. Definitely worth checking out if you’re just getting into poker or are thinking about giving it a try.

I’ll start by saying I read “Emotions” when I was at a bit of a low point; I have some generalized anxiety, and my life has a number of stressors at the moment. I tend to let my emotions get the better of me – I get SO sad and SO angry and SO anxious.

This book was very helpful. It lists 100 different exercises for maintaining good emotional health based upon an important premise – that emotions are neither good nor bad. I had never really considered that prior to listening to this book; I knew that anger can be healthy and that it can be good to cry, but I still considered anger and sadness to be negative emotions. This book presupposes that they are not negative emotions, but neutral, and when felt and dealt with properly, they can be just as beneficial as happiness.

The 100 exercises range in their usefulness, but they focus on giving yourself permission to feel your feelings, checking in on your mental state, watching how your body reacts to your emotional state, learning to say no to others and to forgive others, and taking care of yourself physically. I particularly liked the suggestion that you can change your physical posture to initiate an emotional change: can you feel happy if you’re slouched and scowling?

Regarding the audiobook, the narrator was enthusiastic and positive, and the reading was well-paced. A good buy.
