God I love Bob. When I was little I would watch reruns of The Bob Newhart Show and then new episodes of Newhart. I discovered my uncle’s Button Down Mind record and my mind was blown. These conversations gave the 8 year old me a completely new insight into one of my heroes. Get it. Binge it. Enjoy it.

Holy balls I was not prepared for this. I mean I really should have been seeing as how I’ve been a fan of these guys for a few years now, but there are few things that can prepare you for...well any of that would be spoilers. You need to have the proper bus fare for where you’re going if you like these books. I thought I was driving, but I’m just realizing I’m just a rank amateur in a cardboard box with wheels drawn on. Do yourself a favor, get this collection, and laugh your way into a bus seat!

I was skeptical when trying to figure out where to drop my next credit, but a friend suggested this series and I thought “what the heck, my usual authors don’t have anything new coming down the pipeline” so I clicked add to cart. The next thing I knew I was falling in love with these characters and the narration. Like the title of this review says “wow”. If you were a Firefly fan you’ll love this! If you weren’t, but are still a fan of the lovable outlaw trope, give it a shot. I thought I’d listen to a mission then go do something else, but the 80+ hours flew by over the past two weeks. Also I’m not too ashamed I teared up after the author and narrator notes. I want more!! I wish I could high five JSM and MN, they did an outstanding job of keeping my scatterbrain locked in! 👏👏👏

I had a couple credits burning a hole in my pocket while waiting for some other authors to get a move on it and Audible suggested The Never Hero. I read the reviews and the one about the first half being a slow start but he was happy with it made me give it a shot.

It was really a slow burn in the beginning but I kept with it and WOW. I think I just spent the last 2.5 hours motionless on my couch with my headphones in. The writing is spectacular and the narration lets you escape into the world of Tibbs and co!

Give it a shot, like I did! Now I'm off to get book two *fingers crossed that TEH's baby allows him to finish book three (yeah I just looked up his progress on his blog)*

That warning is there for a reason. I didn’t listen because I thought that was the author being funny, like “haha people at the end of the world be crazy” and not “haha this author has a thesaurus for genitalia”

There is a pretty decent story underneath the interspecies erotica and the narrator did a fantastic job, I just wish half the book wasn’t the main character having weird sex.

Seriously.

This is like Warcraft porn written by someone with only passing knowledge of what sex is like because they read a bunch of books with Fabio on the cover.

Have you ever wondered how you would react to someone having sexy times with a giant ant?

Well you will.

Armon Ellington is 19 year old kid that always felt out of place. He's an orphan, a gamer, and a role playing game geek. When he dies after a 72 hour gaming marathon, instead of going to an afterlife he's transported to a new world governed by rules that are eerily similar to the RPG games he loves. On this new world, Terra, he can be anything he wants, a warrior, mage, or even a crafter. Only, Armon wants more than that, he also wants friends and family.

The premise is amazing. When I was younger and devoted wayyyy too much time to WoW, I used to imagine the backstory of my characters especially when they first spawn and see daylight for the first time in their lives. BUT this book delves deeper than that. This goes into the xp farming and mind numbing routines of low level characters in mmorpgs. I wanted this book to push on and catch up to the exciting fun stuff, and at times it seemed like it was ready to do just that, but then it regresses back into the mundane every day bull that would make me have to take a break from the game. However, I AM looking forward to the second book in the series as I made it through this one. The narrator grows on you and you start getting invested in the characters. Even though I grew frustrated at times, I still stuck with the story and am wanting more.

I won't be picking up a printed version as I feel this story is best taken in through your ear holes, but if there was a graphic novel, I'd snatch it up.

Give it a try

Yet there are greater threats than the walking dead. The deathless have returned, slumbering in the same Arks that carried the werewolves into the present. If they are not stopped they will build a massive necropolis in the remains of San Francisco, and the entire continent will pay the price. Where does No Mere Zombie rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is the second review I have ever written. The first was for the first book in the series, No Such Thing As Werewolves. This series is amazing. Chris is a fantastic story teller and Ryan voices that story perfectly. So far, the Deathless saga is ranking right up there with the MHI series and the Dresden Files for my top spots. Although, If you think about it, those series didn't get me to pull out my keyboard and type a review...

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are no favorite characters here. Just different classifications of favorites. Favorite character to watch grow into a hero? Spoiler. Favorite character to hate? Spoiler. Favorite character to watch his/her strength of character challenged? Spoiler. Favorite villain? Spoiler. I think you get the picture here.

Which character – as performed by Ryan Kennard Burke – was your favorite?

This is tough, but I think I have to go with Blair's Beast when talking in his head.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes. Without giving any spoilers, it is tough to describe. But I can say that there are 3 characters that redeem themselves perfectly, spectacularly, and it gives you the feels.

Any additional comments?

After the cliffhanger at the end of NSTAW, I was terrified to hear this story end. But rest assured, the cliffhanger here is amazingly subtle. You may wake up in the middle of the night or working diligently at work with worky type things, and this thought will pass through your mind "Wait...what?"

Don't fret. That thought isn't a confused question. More of a how-the-hell-did-he-do-that-without-me-noticing question.

Listen and enjoy. Then wait patiently for Vampires Don't Sparkle.
