Miri lives on a mountain where, for generations, her ancestors have quarried stone and lived a simple life. Then word comes that the king's priests have divined her small village the home of the future princess. In a year's time, the prince himself will come and choose his bride from among the girls of the village. The king's ministers set up an academy on the mountain, and every teenage girl must attend and learn how to become a princess.

Hale has a way of making your insides feel mushy and giddy, with bits of anxiety and anticipation thrown in the mix!
In honor of the mountain girls' songs:

Though the story didn't end the way I thought it would go,
it has more meaning than you may know;
discovering best friends,
discovering heart and home,
this portion of story ends
with more to later be told!

I can't wait to listen to book #2!
*Excellent narration BTW!*

kinda weird. I wish there were a clearer definition of a companion. is it like a concubine/mistress with powers? is being a "mistress" optional for all companions? also, companions and wives sound nearly identical. what is the difference? story has potential, I just think these terms should be more clearly defined. also, it felt kinda short for an audiobook.

Some flaws towards the end, but overall more satisfying than the Disney versions. I enjoyed the family connection; it felt much more real. I very much preferred this author's enchantment than the dumb talking furniture. however it never explains the enchanted realm. I had alot of curiosities about it. The climax didn't feel climax-y enough, I think, and I don't believe Beauty would stay an extra day like that. There needed to be something more serious to keep her away. I also think it needed a better resolution (the classic 'everyone turns human and everyone is together again at the castle' I think should've led towards some further outcome). overall I recommend it. it's funny
