Inspired as a boy by the multiple meanings to be found for a single word in the dictionary, Kohei Araki is devoted to the notion that a dictionary is a boat to carry us across the sea of words. But after thirty-seven years creating them at Gembu Books, it's time for him to retire and find his replacement. He discovers a kindred spirit in Mitsuya Majime - a young, disheveled square peg with a penchant for collecting antiquarian books and a background in linguistics - whom he swipes from his company's sales department.

I will never again pick up a dictionary or look up a word without remembering this wonderful story! The dedication of the main characters to portray the accurate meaning of words, and how that mission defines them, is amazing. I also enjoyed learning a bit about Japanese culture. If you have a love for words, and enjoy how people interact, this story is a win/win!

Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

The introduction of intriguing new elements, while evolving the story and characters in unpredictable ways, keeps me thirsting for more. Team Ripley/Bowers never fail to provide a horrifyingly engrossing story that is hard to put down. The bonus chapters, as always, add even more depth to the story and are a delightful addition.

Jeremy and Victor continue to hunt down Stefan's haunted items. The rifle in this story has a truly evil ghost attached to it, causing anyone coming in contact with it to kill others or themselves. Thom Bower's voice for Stefan's dead father brings this terrifyingly imposing ghost to life! I almost feel I have to follow his orders myself. Misfortune befalls poor Marie, but the introduction of an old friend of hers (very old and tiny) was intriguing. Having Shane Ryan, ghost killer extraordinaire, crossover into this series to help was a nice surprise! Great story, and wonderful narration! I can't wait to see what happens next!
