It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. But one person wasn't satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait - and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

I don't expect my favorite books from Nora Roberts, and I expect some level of cheesy romance novel, but this was too much for me. I almost returned it after the first few chapters because it felt so cliche, but I thought maybe the latter half of the book would grab me. It started to. I thought the climax would be good, but it was completely rushed. I felt like this author got in a hurry to meet a deadline at the end. There were also a few parts that I thought could be expanded upon to make the story better. It was distracting to me to be analyzing how "I wish the author had gone further with that" while I was trying to maintain interest. Not her best work.

Whenever I see a book that has been purchased by so many, I may build up my expectations. I was really surprised that the editing was worse than any book I've read in years and I will download some pretty random books. I was aware when the reader took breaks or the sound was pieced together. The female narrator fell flat. I can usually suspend disbelief with most fiction, but this was just beyond far-fetched. I was engaged and entertained, but that's about it. I doubt I will move forward with the series.

I loved another book by this same author, but this book was lacking in so many ways. So many characters were introduced before I cared about the story enough to keep them all straight. There is no mystery as the guilty parties are revealed right away. I zoned out so many times and had to rewind and considered just quitting and returning the book several times.
