Beverly, Harriet, Madison, and Eston are Thomas Jefferson's children by one of his slaves, Sally Hemings, and while they do get special treatment - better work, better shoes, even violin lessons - they are still slaves, and are never to mention who their father is. The lighter-skinned children have been promised a chance to escape into white society, but what does this mean for the children who look more like their mother? As each child grows up, their questions about slavery and freedom become tougher....

I love adult historical fiction, but every once in awhile life is so heavy, it's nice to hear historical fiction written for children which carries a gentler version of that same history. I feel I discovered gold when I discovered Kimberly Brubaker Bradley's books. I wish I had known about her books during the years I read to my own children. I learned so much from Jefferson's Sons and I was impressed by the amount of research that went into this book. The characters were beautifully developed and the story was fascinating.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

This is now one of my all time favorite books. The richness of the plot & characters, as well as John Steinbeck's understated humor, made me wish this book would never end. I feared the story would break my heart, but I was relieved to find East of Eden life affirming and redemptive.

Reasons to be Cheerful was pleasure to listen to! The quirky characters made me laugh, and the main character I found endearing and easy to love. The story was well written, often humorous, and carried an important message without being preachy. Gemma Whelan's narration only added to the fun. I look forward to more books by Nina Stibbe and hopefully narrated by Gemma Whelan.

The first 2/3 of the book was rich and detailed, character driven and beautifully narrated, but suddenly the story leapt over huge chunks of time & the details became vague & sparse. I felt frustrated with both the main characters towards the end and neither narrator sounded natural doing the voices for their aged character.
