For most, a plane crash means the end of life. For Dusti Dawson, it's just the beginning...Dusti and her sister Batina survived the crash, thanks to a couple of brothers who are equal parts menacing and muscled. She'd be grateful...if they hadn't turned out to be delusional kidnappers, who believe Dusti's grandfather is some monstrous halfbreed creature bent on murder. Turns out Vampires, Lycans, and Gargoyles do exist - and they've been crossbreeding to form two hybrid races.

I started this series with the Book 7 Aveoth, because that was the highest rated. I so enjoyed it that although the 1st book wasn't rated as high, I wanted to restart the series at the beginning. THAT WAS A MISTAKE ! I have never read/listened to a book with such annoying female leads. This book begins with two sister leads; then sets you up (presumably) for the 2nd book by splitting up the sisters and following the story of the younger sister in Book 1. I suffered through 7+ chapters wanting to slap her; hoping the story would lead me to like her and enjoy the read. This book makes the mistake of often comparing the sisters referring to Dusti as the 'nicer, milder' one and Bat being absolute hell on wheels. REALLY, you think that will encourage me to read Book 2?! Heck no! I regret this purchase and will avoid Book 2 like the plague. ONE POSITIVE, Savannah Richards puts in just as much of an excellent performance as she did with Aveoth, Book 7.

I don't typically write book reviews, just give star rating; but, I soooo much ENJOYED this book that I purchased another in the series to start immediately, even before I finished this one!

Disclosure, I have been a long-time fan of Vampire & Lycan sexy fiction, but Gargoyles are a new species for me. In Laurann's hands they are HOT and their culture intriguing.

Frankly, the attraction for me to this genre novels is the erotic element; this is the first time I've been so deeply drawn into the STORY! Suspense, drama, smart snarky humor, and yes, a few (but, not enough!) steamy scenes. Laurann pulls it all together to create an amazing world that I want to immerse myself in.

AND, Savannah Richards narration performance is impeccable!

Beauties Shouldn't Sound Like Elderly Drag Queens

I'm a long time fan of Hiassen novels. The story formula here is still the enjoyable same; ridiculously interesting characters in ridiculously dark & hilarious situations.

But, this was the first time I listened to his story instead of read and, if John Rubinstein narrates the other Hiassen books, I'll return to reading them, not listening.

Rubenstein (an established television actor) does a good job on the male characters, but when voiced by him all the females who are supposed to be disarmingly beautiful & sexy (typical Hiassen) sound like elderly drag queens who have smoked way too much for far too long.

Maybe that was supposed to enhance the humor? If so, it didn't work!

I've listened to many books where male narrators successfully gave voice to desirable women, so I know this is possible. I think that's why I just couldn't get past this distraction that by the end of the book had grown to be a major irritant.

Your wedding day is supposed to be the happiest day of your life, right? That's what they say, at least. I went into that day hoping I'd get the happiest day of my life. What I got? The worst. I mean, you really can't get any worse of a day without someone actually dying. So...I may have gotten just a little drunk, and maybe just a tad impetuous...and landed myself in a dive bar somewhere in Alaska, alone, still in my wedding dress, half wasted and heartbroken.

The description of the story piqued my interest; but, while listening, I found the flat tone of the narrators distracting and decidedly lacking in stimulation, especially during the exotic sections.

I had high expectations when I noticed the male/female narration duo; but, just because both genders are represented in voice, the dialogue is not the natural conversation pattern.

The voices alternate by chapter, not in dialogue; so the narrators voice both the female & male characters in their specific chapters.

I guess I'm now spoiled by the excellent reading duo of Noah Michael Levine & Erin Deward; those two blister my ears with their heat! This book's narration left me cold. I returned it without completing.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Maybe as a physical book, but definitely not the audio. The story is fairly good, but the erotic scenes could be longer and better written.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

There are narrators* who's have the voice and intonation to make erotica sizzle off the page to the ears (and other parts of one's body :-)... this narrator is NOT one of them!

* Examples : Clarissa Knightly, Clare Claremont, and sometimes Caroline Wintour.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I very much like Sylvia Day's first Crossfire book and thought the concept of this book would provide a somewhat (rated it 3 stars) interesting and fresh paranormal twist. I really can't say who would enjoy the audio book (see comments below). But fans of Day who also enjoy paranormal might want to READ the book, but I cannot recommend the audio.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I didn't finish the story, the narration was so annoying, I really can't comment on changes that could improve the story. But of what I read, the concept was somewhat interesting.

What didn’t you like about Shana Savage’s performance?

The erotica could have been good as written, Sylvia Day is very good at writing 'heat', but the narration stripped all that could have been sensual/sexual about those sections. And frankly that's one of the primary reasons for buying the book! So that was a significant disappointment!! Shana Savage is fine with the female voices, but her male voices sound like monotone Midwest teenage boys, trying to sound sexy by deepening their voices AND at the same time, unsuccessfully attempting Scottish accents!! It was so annoying to listen I didn't finish the book!

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed based on all above.

So far, he's found a link between the killer and Faith - and if Gray has to get close to her to catch the killer, so be it. Faith is sweet and feminine, everything Gray wants and desires in a woman, but he suspects she's playing games. No way would she allow a man to call the shots in their relationship. Or would she? Faith sees in Gray the strong, dominant man she needs, but he seems determined to keep her at a distance.

What made the experience of listening to Sweet Surrender the most enjoyable?

Maya Banks spins enjoyable WELL-WRITTEN erotic stories running with the BDSM theme; that partnered with Wintour's narrative makes for an excellent package!

Caroline Wintour is amazing! Each characters' gender and personality are well presented in her voice and she really makes the erotic scenes sizzle! To the extent that I did a search to see what other books she has done.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sweet Surrender?

No distinctly memorable moments, but I liked the fact that it wasn't just a stream of sexy scenes loosely tied by a weak story. The story was definitely there --substantial and satisfying-- very well balanced with the erotic to make for an excellent read in this genre.

Have you listened to any of Caroline Wintour’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was my first time listening to Wintour.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reaction, just really enjoyed the sizzle of the story!

What disappointed you about The Sisters of APF?

It became amusingly (not really) annoying that most of the 'eroticism' was in the language, but almost no descriptive details of actual action; hence 'all tease, no sizzle!'

Has The Sisters of APF turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but definitely off this author

Have you listened to any of Nicole Small’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Nicole was fine, it was the material she had to work with that was lacking.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really.
