As a child, Chris Hooper dreamed of monsters. But in deep space, he found only darkness and isolation. Then, on planet LV178, he and his fellow miners discovered a storm-scoured, sand-blasted hell - and trimonite, the hardest material known to man. When a shuttle crashes into the mining ship Marion, the miners learn that there was more than trimonite deep in the caverns. There was evil, hibernating and waiting for suitable prey.

A fun listen, but a few too many stereotypical characters and a bit too simple in the overall arc. Kinda sad/funny for any of the characters to expect to live long with no one left to manage the hundreds of nuclear power plants arround the world, many to most of which would fail to successfully shut down before core breaches... But hey, dream on:)

Overall I really enjoyed this story, yet a four star rating is even pushing it a bit. Both the voice acting style of the reader and the actual script itself bored and lost me at times, being so alternatingly fun then drab, fun then drab ect... Again I did enjoy the overall storyline, elements of Dune for sure, but I think I will read the following two titles in the series to attempt a fresh personal approach to the characters.

Alex Morrow is not new to the police force - or to crime - but there is nothing familiar about the call she has just received. On a still night in a quiet suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, three armed men have slipped into a house, demanding a man who is not, and has never been, inside the front door. In the confusion that ensues, one family member is shot and another kidnapped, the assailants demanding an impossible ransom. Is this the amateur crime gone horribly wrong that it seems, or something much more unexpected?

From the Book of Revelation to The Road Warrior, from A Canticle for Leibowitz to The Road, storytellers have long imagined the end of the world, weaving eschatological tales of catastrophe, chaos, and calamity. In doing so, these visionary authors have addressed one of the most challenging and enduring themes of imaginative fiction: The nature of life in the aftermath of total societal collapse.
